In mid-August, youth from Wide Rainbow, a contemporary art after school program in NYC, joined together with the youth from North East Community Center for a cyanotype printmaking workshop in the vegetable garden at Sky High Farm, exploring the alchemical power of the plants and sun in a new way. Under the guidance of Praise Fuller, a Brooklyn-based cyanotype artist hailing from Texas, attendees learned how to arrange materials into unique compositions that were then transferred as silhouettes onto treated paper, creating an opportunity for plant identification and exploration of natural texture, shape, and composition. This program was particularly exciting because it provided youth from New York City and young people from upstate New York the opportunity to meet and work alongside one another– something that often isn’t available to populations hailing from either area.
