Protectores de la Tierra is a community-driven initiative dedicated to food sovereignty, ecological restoration, and land stewardship with it’s flagship space based out of Black and Indigenous territory in Nuquí, Chocó, Colombia. With support from a SHF Grant, they expanded their impact by converting lawns into food gardens in New York, creating sustainable urban agriculture models that increase access to fresh, locally grown food.
Through this grant, they invested in soil, seeds, tools, and material delivery, ensuring community members had the resources to cultivate thriving gardens. Funding also supported volunteer meals, fostering collective engagement in food justice efforts.
By reclaiming green spaces for community food production, Protectores de la Tierra strengthens local food systems, promoted sustainability, and empowered historically marginalized communities with knowledge and resources for long-term food sovereignty.
